LMS Manchester-Birmingham Express at Handforth 1938 686 viewsA photo from 31/05/39 towards Crewe. Note the wooden ramp down to the platform from the road level with the Station pub in the background. Also the signal box can be seen near the bridge and points leading towards the sidings where South Acre Drive now stands.
The locomotve is LMS Compound 4-4-0 No. 1131 bound for Birmingham. The rear coaches are GWR and would be uncoupled at Crewe and attched to a Shrewsbury train. The station name board is from the pre-1923 L&NWR era.
The road bridge was raised for the 1960 electrification and the "down" paltform relocated opposite the "up" one.
